Mechanical timer for 24 hours. On the timer, there is a dial with the hours 1 to 12 for DAY and 1 to 12 for NIGHT. There are 2 activator plates on the dial that can be individually set to the wanted times. These plates will activate a lever mechanism that in turn will retract the handle coming out of the box. This could activate in turn something mechanical, or an electrical switch. Newbridge Horstmann also made timers for gas lamps, so could also be the purpose.

On the inside of the lid there is some kind of quality control label ("Cased by", "Timed by", "Exam & Issued by") but handwritten text seems to be gone has been gone by time (or has never been written).

The casing seems to be painted steel/iron. The lid and mechanism brass.
