The sundial/compass has an octagonal shape. Is approx 70mm in height and 63mm in width. The wooden box (Mahogany) measures 82mm on 72mm and is 20mm in height.

The front of the dial is signed with "Butterfield, Paris" and has 4 scales for different latitudes: 52, 49, 45, 40.

The latitude indicator (birds bec) can be set between 20 and 60°.

The back of the sundial had inscriptions for some european cities: Londres, Anvers, Lille, Monse, Dunquerque, Dyon, Poitiers, Lisbonne, Madrid, Toulouse, Rome, Lyon, Vienne, Rouen, Baste, Brest, Paris.
