The decimal balance (bascule) was invented by monk Alois Quintenz around 1820. The bascule was used mainly for the weighting of bulk goods like coal, potatoes; grain, ... What made this invention special was that the goods had not to be entered on the weighting platform through the use of ingenious lever mechanism.
